Errors and Omissions

Last week’s Mardi Gras show turned into a technical errorfest. There is no adequate explanation, so we won’t attempt one. We just hope you weren’t paying close attention and that we can make things right this week.

Blues and Rhythm Show 168 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, February 17th, (1:00-2:30 pm)

We broadcast on Tuesdays. That means it would be difficult for us to ignore Mardi Gras. Nor would we choose to ignore it. We did not present a Mardi Gras show last year, however, because Fat Tuesday fell in the middle of Fundraising Week for CFMU

As is the case with Christmas, there are a limited number of Mardi Gras pieces to choose from. We use our Mardi Gras program to explore the New Orleans musical tradition, which, while it has hugely influenced blues and R&B, still stands slightly apart from the rest of the American tradition. It makes sense to devote a couple of shows a year just to New Orleans and Mardi Gras affords an opportunity to do that once a year, anyway. This year’s Mardi Gras special will include R&B, a bit of the jazz that relates in part to the marching band history in the city, and to the indigenous funk music that underlies a lot of what the marching bands do today as well as the music of the Mardi Gras Indian bands. we’ll also sample just a bit the Mardi Gras music of the Bayou and Southwest Louisiana.

On the Show:

Joe Lutcher – Young Men of New Orleans – Art Neville – Wild Magnolias – Bunk Johnson – Johnny Wiggs – Meters – Eddie Bo – Balfa Brothers – James Booker – Earl King –  and others

Listen to the program at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.msu.mcmaster.ca. The program will be available to stream or as a podcast until March 16th.

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, February 10th, (1:00-2:30 pm)

We had begun putting a program together for last Tuesday when events intruded and we realized we would not be able to make the show. This week’s program picks up where last week’s incomplete draft of a show left off. Apologies to those who tuned in last week to hear a repeat.

What we have lined up for this week includes some classic blues, some R&B, and some ragtime and boogie. Also, a brief consideration of Valentine’s Day and the blues; a tribute to Don Covay; and, by request, Jackie Wilson.

On the Show:

Roosevelt Sykes – Bessie Smith – Fats Noel – Jimmy Yancey – Josie Miles – Roy Brown – Michael Jerome Browne – Don Covay – Jackie Wilson – Nathaniel Dett Chorale – and others

Listen to the program at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.msu.mcmaster.ca. The program will be available to stream or as a podcast until March 9th.
