Juneteenth is a date that is observed in a number of U.S. communities but it began in Texas, recognizing the occasion of U.S. troops enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation when Texas failed to e its provisions. For our Juneteenth special we concentrate on Texas blues, gospel and soul. Texas is and was a large and diverse state with a rich history of African-American music. The first great figure in blues guitar on record was Blind Lemon Jefferson. Barrelhouse and boogie piano are said to have developed early in Dallas and Houston. T-Bone Walker, from Oak Cliff introduced modern blues style. Lightnin’ Hopkins was the most famous and influential practitioner of post-war down-home blues. Several of the greatest quartets from Gospel’s Golden Era came from Texas. A lot of blues and roots music coming from Texas still today.

Our survey takes us from the twenties to the seventies to artists performing today.
