Blues and Rhythm Show 288 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, September 1, 2020 (10:00 to 12:00 noon)

Ninth show from our North End bubble. This week, six days before Labour Day, we have a feature segment about reflections on work in blues and country music in the pre-war era and beyond. Nothing too serious. Neither black or white vernacular music dealt much with issues of labour, workers’ interests or collective struggle, and few songs deal entirely with the subject of work. But there are many songs that include reflections on work and its impact on peoples’ lives Also on the program, blues from the fities and sixties, Chicago and Memphis; Gospel; and Soul.

We submitted the audio file for this program late and we are unsure when it will air as of this moment. Our eighth show from the home studio. On the program this week, a feature devoted to Rhythm & Blues from Kansas City, both from K.C. itself and from L.A. where many K.C musicians located after a reform movement swept the Pendergast city government machine from power and as the lure of the Coast economy drew them from the city at the same time as opportunities to play were disappearing. Also on the program, Western Swing, and in that segment the story of Johnnie Lee Wills’ “Rag Mop”–as we understand it. Bit of Soul to end the program.

Blues and Rhythm Show 290 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, September 15, 2020 (10:00 to 12:00 noon)

Our 11th broadcast from home. We had two feature segments this week. The first devoted to Coast Blues, mostly from L.A., mostly from the sixties, following the release of an album from Ace (UK) compiling blues from the Bihari brothers’ Kent label. Later in the show we take a look at a fascinating, if troubling, set from JSP, Protobilly: Minstrel and Tin Pan Alley DNA of Country Music. Basically, the set documents the migration of Minstrel and Vaudeville songs not only into the Hillbilly field but into the Blues and repertoire of black songsters. Some of the songs in the brief selection we chose will be offensive to listeners. Also in the program, some latter-day Soul recordings.

On the Show:

Frank “Floorshow” Culley – Flash Terry – King Solomon – Sonny Rhodes – Big Mama Thornton – Sady Courville & Dennis McGee – Merrill Moore – Cousins & DeMoss – Banjo Joe – May Irwin – Georgia White – Sir Mack Rice – Michelle Willson – and others.

Blues and Rhythm Show 291 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, September 22, 2020 (10:00 to 12:00 noon)

Once again, this is a prerecorded show. We have some 1940s R&B from Mercury, classic R&B expressly for dancing, a bit of post-war Western Swing out of California and some Gospel from the Golden Era and just after. In the second half of the program we have a feature that looks closely at the Paramount label, the perhaps unintentionally great “race” label of the 1921-1932 era. This is the second instalment of a series we began in January. The first instalment took us just up to 1924. This one takes us through that year and into 1925, from classic blues to Papa Charlie Jackson, with Gospel and Hillbilly along the way.

On the Show:

Albert Ammons & His Rhythm Kings – Helen Humes – Buddy Johnson & His Orchestra – Mainline Amos Garrett – Saddle Tramps – Frank Hovington – Edmonia Henderson – Jelly Roll Morton – Ida Cox – Ukelele Bob Williams – Norfolk Jubilee Qartet – Jimmie Blythe -Bessie Griffin – Back Home Choir – and others.

Listen to the program each week at FM 93.3 in Hamilton, live on Cogeco Cable 288 or on CFMU online at cfmu.ca. The program will be available to stream or download until for eight weeks until November 17th as a podcast. Just go the website, bring up the right playlist and stream or download the show.
