Blues and Rhythm Show 287 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, August 25, 2020 (10:00 to 12:00 noon.

We submitted the audio file for this program late and we are unsure when it will air as of this moment. Our eighth show from the home studio. On the program this week, a feature devoted to Rhythm & Blues from Kansas City, both from K.C. itself and from L.A. where many K.C musicians located after a reform movement swept the Pendergast city government machine from power and as the lure of the Coast economy drew them from the city at the same time as opportunities to play were disappearing. Also on the program, Western Swing, and in that segment the story of Johnnie Lee Wills’ “Rag Mop”–as we understand it. Bit of Soul to end the program.

Errors & Omissions

We provide a lot of information on the program. Inevitably we make mistakes on air, even in prerecorded shows. One obvious error in BRS 286 had to do with the instrumentation behind Rose Mitchell on “Baby Please Don’t Go”. As the listener would have noticed there was only guitar, drums and handclaps. No piano and bass. We wonder if the guitar might have been Edgar Blanchard but have no evidence to say so.

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, September 2nd, (1:00-2:30 pm)

A special program for Welcome Week at McMaster University.We were live in the atrium of the McMaster University Student Union. No theme, just a selection of blues, R&B, gospel and soul. As well, a couple of examples of the hybrid music known sometimes as soul-blues, music sustained by a loyal audience but which survives without much attention from the larger music industry or the blues media.

A review program based upon Amanda Petrusich’s book Do Not Sell at Any Price, about the pursuit of the rarest 78 recordings and the influence that blues 78 collectors have had upon what we understand about early blues. The show will feature many fine recordings from the twenties and thirties.
