Blues and Rhythm Show 333x on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, November 2, 2021 (10:00 to 12:00 noon)

Apologies to any that tuned in to hear the program outlined on this site for last week. It’s hazard of submitting audiofiles to the station rather than being present in the studio that the wrong show may come to air. That happened last week. What aired last Tuesday was a repeat of last week’s program (BRS 332). Beyond our control, but as the Syl Johnson song goes, “Sorry ’bout Dat”. We’ve revised the program and the emphasis on Chicago recordings is now greater than the original show we planned. Things just worked out that way. Brief feature on Syl Johnson; Wolf and Sonny Boy; Cobra; Gospel from Chicago.

“So hard to be nice when you treat me the way you do” — Otis Rush

“Here in the ghetto it’s a sad situation. Call it what you wanna, it’s a concrete reservation” — Syl Johnson

On the Show:

Junior Wells – Jimmy Johnson – Downchild Blues Band – Elroy Hart – Buddy Durham – Ginger St. James – Morgan Davis – Homesick James – Sonny Boy Williamson – Magic Sam – Syl Johnson – Otis Clay – Alvin Cash & the Registers – and others

Listen to the program each week at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.ca. The program will be available to stream or download until for eight weeks until December 22nd as a podcast. Just go the website, scroll through 40 shows to Tuesday 10:00 am bring up the right playlist and stream or download the show.

August 30, 2021

Swear to Tell the Truth, August 31, 2021 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

We’ve been on a summer schedule but haven’t taken off a block of time. We’ve alternated new shows with repeats. This will be the last summer repeat. Look up Blues & Rhythm Show #298 for the original description of this week’s repeat.

We weren’t entirely happy with this program when it first aired in December. We do think the playlist stands up, so here is the original show with a couple of minor modifications.

This week’s program is all Gospel. Our original notion was to trace the history of Gospel recordings from the beginning. but that was probably too ambitious for a two hour program. We decided to limit the show’s attention to post-war Gospel and then looking at the widespread concept of Gospel’s Golden Age. Our playlist includes Gospel groups, quartets, soloists and singing preachers, some of whom played instruments. In some cases we have chosen the obvious and celebrated sides of well-known artists and in others the more obscure recordings in the discography.

“Some of you members, two by seven, some of you members will never get to Heaven” — Elder Charles Beck

“Just about the time I thought I was lost my dungeon shook and then the chain fell off” — Edna Gallmon Cooke

On the Show:

Staple Singers – Wings of Jordan Choir – Dixie Hummingbirds – Pilgrim Travelers – Famous Ward Singers – Brother Joe May – Goldia Haynes – Swan Silvertone Singers – Elder Charles Beck – Blind Boys of Alabama – Edna Gallmon Cooke – Rev. Cleophus Robinson with Josephine James – Swanee Quintet – Sensational Nightingales – and others.

“I was a high geared daddy but sweet mama put me in low” – Tommy Little

“Yes, I’m gonna get me religion. I’m gonna join the Baptist Church. You know I want to be a Baptist preacher so I won’t have to work” — Son House

We’ll be off again next week. Last week of our summer schedule. There will be a repeat broadcast. We’ll tell you what is playing closer to the broadcast date.

Errors and Omissions

If you listened to BRS 325 (August 10th) to the end you encountered a moment in the program when two tracks were playing simultaneously. We allowed a stray track into our audiofile. We don’t know how we caused this to happen but we missed it in our review of the file. We’ve corrected the master file in case we use the program in repeat.

Blues and Rhythm Show 309 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, March 2, 2021 (10:00 to 12:00 noon) – International Women’s Day Program

On this year’s International Women’s Day program, we feature women’s Blues, Rhythm & Blues, Gospel and a bit of Soul. Our playlists week by week are dominated by recordings by men, of songs written by men, produced by men, and issued by companies run by men. The themes of the songs we play reflect men’s point of view most of the time. We try to maintain a balance but ot is difficult given the legacy of recording we work from. Blues as a genre were pretty conservative over the years and the same verses and themes keep manifesting from one generation of songs to the next. Ironically, a lot of the songs that have become associated with male singers were passed on from the classic era of the twenties, the years dominated by women’s recordings, which lasted until 1926 or 1927. Most people recognize the male versions of the songs without recognizing the verses that come from songs by Ida Cox, Alberta Hunter or other classic singers but it’s men’s voices that have been dominant in Blues, R&B and Soul. So, we do this show to in a small way redress the balance.

On the Show:

Cleo Brown – International Sweethearts of Rhythm – Gladys Bentley – Ella Johnson – Alberta Hunter – Louise Johnson – Rita Chiarelli – Mary Lou Williams – Big Mama Thornton – Arizona Dranes – Inez Andrews – Molly Johnson – Jackie Richardson – Big Maybelle – and others.

Listen to the program each week at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.ca. The program will be available to stream or download until for eight weeks until April 27h as a podcast. Blues and Rhythm Show 308 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, February 16, 2021 (10:00 to 12:00 noon)

We should be describing our annual Mardi Gras special but something happened this year. We missed the important detail that Fat Tuesday falls earlier this year, today, February 16th, in fact,–until we’d already put together our program. Too late to put it aside and assemble another show. What we have instead is a program with a segment featuring Rhythm & Blues from Chicago independent labels and another segment in the second hour divided between recordings by Blind Boy Fuller with his associates and some later recordings by Piedmont artists. Also, something from the recent EP Lo-Fi Blues and a bit of live Rosetta Tharpe from 1970.

On the Show:

Floyd Smith – Bill Samuels – Tab Smith Orchestra with Chick Young – Alberta Adams – Sugar Brown – Harpdog Brown & the Bloodhounds – Lonnie Johnson & Elmer Snowden – Blind Boy Fuller – Blind Gary Davis – Henry Johnson – Tarheel Slim – Lone Star Playbiys – Rev. Joihn Wilkins – and others.
