Further episode in our survey of Volume 1 of the Third Man Rise and Fall of Paramount set. This episode takes us to just short of mid-1927–Blues, Gospel, Country, Jazz from the Paramount label’s large output in the mid-twenties as well as tracks from Gennett and the Black Patti label, established by Paramount A&R man, Mayo Williams, while he was still working for Paramount. Also on the program, early John Lee Hooker, more from Detroit, rare Blues from Texas.

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, September 10th (10:00 to 12:00 noon)

Last week, our program began with a feature on post-war Chicago blues based upon recordngs spanning the years !947 to 1960. This week, we cover the similar period in Detroit Blues. Detroit had a significant down-home blues scene but not the recording industry that existed in Chicago before Motown. Detroit attracted African-American migrants from he South, like Chicago, and from many of the same places although from a slightly more southeastern range of territory. Chicago had steel and meat packing. Detroit had auto. We have recordings dating from 1949 to 1959.

We also have some latter-day Detroit blues recordings, a short venture into country records from the Motor City, a segment devoted to Gospel from Detroit, including a quartet believed to have Wilson Pickett as lead, and a bit of funky Detroit Soul.

For the week between Christmas and New Year’s we generally dispense with any broad themes or features on the program and minimize the commentary. This year’s end of the year show will be heavy on Chicago blues from the album era with some R&B on the side.

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, September 2nd, (1:00-2:30 pm)

A special program for Welcome Week at McMaster University.We were live in the atrium of the McMaster University Student Union. No theme, just a selection of blues, R&B, gospel and soul. As well, a couple of examples of the hybrid music known sometimes as soul-blues, music sustained by a loyal audience but which survives without much attention from the larger music industry or the blues media.
