Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, June 18th (10:00 to 12:00noon)
This week a Texas special to mark The arrival of Juneteenth, Juneteenth is observed annually on June 19th in memory of the Emancipation of slaves in America. The date, June 19th, is the date in 1865 that General Granger came to Galveston with troops and affirmed the Emancipation Proclamation that had hung in abeyance in the state of Texas. With Texas effectively distant from much of the conflict in the Civil War slaveholding continued as though the Proclamation had not taken effect on January 1, 1863.
No political theme to this program but two hours of Texas blues, R&B, soul and gospel, perhaps not unlike the Juneteenth Festivals that take place in different locales. An exploration of the rich and diverse traditions of black Texican music.
On the Show:
Ray Sharpe – Little Chickadee – Frankie Lee Sims – Oak Cliff T-Bone – Lead Belly – Miss Country Slim – Lightnin’ Hopkins – Dallas Jamboree Band – Hop Wilson – Gatemouth Brown – James Davis – Miss Lavelle – Milton Hopkins & Jewel Brown – and others
