Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, October 1st (10:00 to 12:00 noon)

We opened this weeks program with some R&B out of Chicago on the Miracle and Premium labels and from Aristocrat and Chess. We try to cover Rhythm & Blues from the forties and fifties as closely as we do down-home blues from the  same era. As with blues recordings there were many worthy but obscure records and many that have been forgotten since they were once current. Where R&B once ruled the African-American charts it was mostly forgotten by the 1960s when the so-called Blues Revival took place. Today, we can appreciate the quality and variety of this music and we can appreciate a bit better the way the world was in a bygone time.

Also on this weeks program, a bit of mandolin blues, a couple of what appear to have been studio bands that recorded dance and blues records in the late 1930s, Bill and Charlie Monroe, new music from Harpdog Brown and something from HowellDevine.

Last segment of the show devoted to the Gospel Spirit reissues from Columbia Legacy following our exploration of blues from the Columbia catalogue. Many of the pre-war blues recordings in Columbia’s vaults were acquired from other companies in the twenties and thirties. Columbia Legacy put together some excellent gospel reissues in the 1990s, much of it recorded by Columbia or its OKeh subsidiary.

These parts of Columbia’s vaults have been mostly neglected in recent years but you can still find most of the Columbia Legacy reissue albums of blues and gospel one way or another today, if you are so inclined. Meanwhile, we like to highlight these collections from time to time because of the resources and documentation that went into their production. We don’t have to identify the source albums on the air but you can identify the titles from each week’s playlist on the CFMU website as long as the shows remain available as podcasts, ie., eight weeks.

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, September 3rd (10:00 to 12:00 noon)

After four out of five weeks absence from the studio we’re back with a new show.

We have a program devoted mostly to music from Chicago or influenced by Chicago blues. Main feature is a segment devoted to Chicago Blues from the years 1947 to 1960, with recordings made for small Chicago indie labels but also for Columbia and Chess. We can draw from recent box sets devoted to Chicago blues from Boulevard Varese and Wienerworld. 

Commentators have always wrestled with how to describe post-war blues style as distinguished from rhythm & blues since writers for Billboard and Cashbox developed their own shorthand in the 1940s for capsule reviews of new releases. Reissuers today appear to have settled upon the term “Down Home”. We don’t think it’s an exact fit but it emphasizes the continuity in style and themes between pre- and post-war blues as opposed to R&B. Blues in the large and mid-size cities of the midwest and west coast reflected an experience that was different from what performers and their migrant audience had lived in the south but singers didn’t abandon the older themes and their songs were still partly addressed to a southern audience. Singers in Chicago sang about life in Chicago but were still singing about Mississippi and Arkansas to former and present southerners.

On the show, we also have some later performances of Chicago blues standards on the bill and a few gospel sides from Chicago. Along the way, we also have a couple of sides from the country corner and a brief look at the music the Ace/Kent Record labels of England are selling as New Breed R&B and blues.

Blues and Rhythm Show 186 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, June 30th, (1:00-2:30 pm)

This week we go to air the day before Canada Day, July 1st. It was known once as Dominion Day but we threw off that vestige of our colonial past. This is not a program that specializes in Canadian blues-oriented music. Week to week, we concentrate on aspects of the history of blues, r&b and soul in the classic years and we play recent or contemporary music when we judge the music connects with something in that classic tradition, whether the music comes from Canada or elsewhere. Other blues-oriented programs are more up-to-date and more expert about newer music that is placed in the blues category. We play some of what those other shows play and a lot we don’t.

Notwithstanding anything stated above, we will be playing only Canadian music on June 30th. Some of the recordings are more current. Others go back a few years. A lot of Canadian artists have gone deep into the music and found something of what is essential in it. We play those artists when we find their music and this week we turn the entire 90 minutes to Canadian recordings.

We touch on a few different themes in this week’s program. We begin with a few records from or about Atlanta, take a brief look at the lineup for the upcoming Hammer Bluesfest (scheduled for November 1st), bring you a brief set of soul recordings made between 1968 and 1998 and raise a few questions about the phenomenon sometimes referred to as “soul-blues”. And we end the show with a couple of recordings by large gospel choirs.
