Blues and Rhythm Show 252 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, July 23rd (10:00 to 12:00 noon)

A lot of the work that goes into this show is work we do preparing at home and we rely on our technological devices to put a show together. We’d planned to take a week off in any case but technical obstacles prevented us from assembling a show two weeks in a row.

Our July 23rd program included rhythm & blues recorded between 1941 and 1959. Also, pair of obscure blues pianists from the 1930s and tracks from a couple of significant Delta bluesmen who recorded just before the war. We also featured some recordings from leading gospel groups in the 1950s after reviewing the Malaco 50th anniversary Gospel set in the previous show.

Cab Calloway & His Orchestra – Saunders King – King Perry – Big Maybelle – James Brown & the Famous Flames – Jesse James – Tony Hollins – Morgan Davis  – Rod Piazza – Roberta Martin Singers – Caravans – Roy Head & the Traits – Ray Agee – and others

Listen to the program each week at FM 93.3 in Hamilton, live on Cogeco Cable 288 or on CFMU online at the CFMU website. The program will be available to stream or download until September 17. CFMU podcasts now available for 8 weeks. Couldn’t be easier. Just go the website, bring up the playlist and stream or download the show.

Blues and Rhythm Show 204 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, November 10th, (1:00-2:30 pm).

Our plan for this week’s program changed as we put it together. What we have is a program of blues and R&B, some well-known recordings and some obscure. The R&B we have lined up to play ranges from 1941 to 1964, from an era when what was recorded was pretty much what the arrangement the band brought to the studio to the era when the music was as much the producer’s art or the studio band’s as it was the named artist.

Besides R&B we have some modern blues records a bit off the beaten path and several piano blues recordings from 1936. On the R&B side, there’s a rare track from Cleo Brown from a new compilation called Boogie Woogie Gals.

No overriding theme in this week’s program. A few longtime favourite tracks and other things we found when we were putting together the show.

On the Show:

Noble “Thin Man” Watts – Hot Lips Page – Buddy Johnson Orchestra – Marie Adams – Smiley Lewis – The Rockin’ Highliners – Jesse James – Ray Agee – Ted Taylor – Tiny Topsy – Little Willie John – a.o.

Listen to the program at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.msumcmaster.ca. The program will be available to stream or as a podcast until December 7th.

Next week (February 25th)

Next week we’ll present some pre-World War 2 blues in some kind of feature yet to be determined.  In two weeks, it will be Fundraising Week at CFMU. That will be March 4th for this program. We hope some of you will show your support for the station and the program, including those who might listen online. (That’s also Fat Tuesday, so we will not be able to present a Mardi Gras program this year.) February 11th will be our annual all-woman show for International Women’s Day. Fundraising prevents us from putting on this show in advance of I.W.D.
