Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, June 4th (10:00 to 12:00noon)

After four weeks in the Tuesday morning 10:00 slot the program becomes official in the CFMU schedule this week. We’ll be here at 10:00 Tuesday mornings in the coming weeks. We may consider a change in the schedule in the fall but we’re going to try to make this timeslot work for us.

As this will be our first show not as a fill in for Out With It, which previously occupied this place in the schedule, we’re going to use the June 4th program as a survey-showcase of what we will be doing on the show week to week.

Blues, Rhythm & Blues, Soul and Gospel on this week’s show–R&B from 1949 to 1954, Blues from 1934 to 1950, Soul from several famous studios in the south and Chicago and Gospel from the “Golden Era” and later. With the two-hour format in the morning, we will likely present more of a magazine format rather than long features but we won’t know for sure until we work with the two hour

Blues and Rhythm Show 213 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

No theme this week but we have some Soul music out of Memphis and other locations, including tracks by Otis Clay that didn’t fit into last week’s tribute feature. Also, some gospel and a bit of music with a Buffalo connection.

We sample the latest album by Willie Walker who continues to surprise with his ability to keep it fresh with albums of new material and inspired covers into his seventies. The new album follows on the series of albums with Minneapolis’ Butanes and Curtis Obeda.  The new album shows no creative decline from  the previous albums made with the Butanes.

We also  have a few more blues tracks from Austria’s Wolf label and a live recording by one-time star of the chicago clubs, Ricky Allen.

We secod guessed ourself on the date of Otis Clay’s hit for Hi Records, “Trying to Live My Life Without You”. It entered the charts in November, 1972. Peaked at number 24 in the Billboard Soul/R&B charts.

Blues and Rhythm Show 200 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

   Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, October 13th, (1:00-2:30 pm).

No special theme on our 200th original show. Blues, R&B, Gospel and Soul this week. We’ve gone back to some vinyl sources for some of tracks for this show. As is often the case, we’re following up on some threads pulled loose on earlier shows. Blues recordings from the 1930s and from the Blues Revival era, storefront and streetcorner gospel, a sampling of R&B records, a few random Soul tracks on the program.

We can’t represent all the music we play every week, or any week, so we try to rotate styles, eras, artists from  week to week. We didn’t have a plan when we put this week’s show together but we wanted to play a few particular recordings, some of which made the cut and others that didn’t. The rest of the show fell into place.

                                                                              

There are two competing pressures that influence us when we put together the program each week. The first is the compulsion to play everything we’d like to play in 90 minutes per week. The other is the instinct to save every great selection for exactly the right context in the right program. Some weeks we’re happy with the result. Other weeks, not so much.

Errors and Omissions:

Last week, we identified Willie Steele as the guitar player on the “Prison Bound Blues”  by Willie Nix. It was, of course, Willie johnson. Willie Johnson and Willie Steele both played in Howlin’ Wolf’s band before he moved to Chicago. Steele was the drummer.

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, June 9th, (1:00-2:30 pm)

This week, the promised followup special covering Chicago Soul. We cover a period extending from 1961 to 1975 but most of the recordings are from the sixties. Soul music combined elements of gospel, R&B, blues and, especially in the south, country music. In Chicago, the blues element was more pronounced and singers like Tyrone Davis, Syl Johnson and Lee “Shot” Williams were performing blues before they became known as soul artists. If you doubt that the transition was meaningful, think about Syl Johnson’s initial response when he was asked to perform and record blues again. He thought that he and his music were being dissed by the new blues community. Of course, “soul”, like “blues”, was a marketing concept as much as it effectively defined a genre of music.”Soul” describes music whose characteristics are at least as diffuse as blues.

We’re short of time. Let’s conclude by saying there was a lot of blues in Chicago soul music.

Blues and Rhythm Show 98 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, September 24th, 2013 (1:00-2:30 pm)

Most of this program will feature music emanating from –. Not that we planned a special on Chicago. It just worked out that way.

Chicago was home to a distinctive style of blues in the fifties and beyond. Mention Chicago blues and people have an idea of what you are talking about. After World War 2, independent record companies sprang up in Chicago to exploit local talent and markets. Miracle, Aristocrat-Chess, Parkway, Chance, VeeJay, United/States, USA were among the labels recording blues and gospel in the city. This evolution of local labels and studios supporting local music continued through the sixties with the rise of soul music and Chicago represented its distinctive soul styles on both locally based and on national labels. OKeh and Brunswick each operated from Chicago offices for a period of time. In the end, both blues and soul were eclipsed by disco and, later, hip-hop but not before the labels that recorded and marketed the music disappeared one by one or were the object of corporate takeovers, like GRT Corporation’s purchase of Chess and the move of Chess company headquarters to Los Angeles. 

All of the above is background to the music which was created by waves of African-American migrants to Chicago as well as and in combination with native born Chicagoans like Billy Boy Arnold. And even after the labels folded or were bought out, artists like Syl johnson and Tyrone Davis continued to perform for local audiences while new generations of performers have emerged to carry on and renew the blues and soul traditions of the city in a changing demographic. As national trends shifted away from blues and soul, Chicago still had the critical mass of support to sustain some kind of local scene.

Included on the program, once more, will be three of the headliners of the Blues Explosion show, scheduled for this coming Friday, September 27th, at Hamilton Place.
