Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, April 20, 2021 (10:00 to 12:00 noon)
An installment in our chronological survey of the Paramount label’s history of recording this week covering the end of 1926 and the beginning of 1927. Blues, Gospel and Hillbilly from the catalogues of Paramount and its affiliated logos. Also included, a couple of items from Black Patti, which Mayo Williams established surreptiously and separately from his activity as what might be called Paramount’s A&R director, the position he left in the course of 1927. We try to unravel the story behind a famous Hillbilly song that is believed to be about the brutal treatment of African-American convict labour in a Tennessee mine.
Also on the program, B.B. KIng, Smothers brothers, a Country-Hillbilly segment and some Peacock label Gospel.
