Gotham Reissue series

Additional info after our Gotham label special

It’s not our role to publicize record companies or vendors but we’ll sometimes let you know about stuff that is newly available or going out of distribution. We gave out some misinformation on the air in our April 2nd program devoted to the Gotham Record Company of Philadelphia.  The company that has the Gotham reissue series is oldies.com. There is a company by the name we mentioned on the air but it is not the right company.

The Gotham reissue series consisted of straight reissues of the original Krazy Kat LPs from Interstate Music in the U.K. The CDs were issued around 1990. There are 14 to 16 tracks on each and the Collectables label  issued all of the 35 or so original LPs, including a couple of rockabilly compilations and another called White Gospel. They all appear to be out of print but all may still be available from oldies.com @ $2.98 apiece. Be forewarned that U.S. I.S.A.P. postage rates have recently been increased.

Our recommendations of the best albums in the series are

Gotham House Party – like an introductory compilation of Gotham R&B

Jimmy Preston, Vol. 1 & 2

Brown Gal – Camille Howard, Lil Armstrong, Dorothy Donegan

Dan Pickett – 1949 Blues

East Coast Blues – Pickett, Sonny Terry, Ralph Willis, Doug Quattlebaum

Amazing Grace – Davis Sisters, Harmonizing Four, Edna Gallmon Cooke, etc.

Frank Motley, Dual Trumpeter – early recordings of future Toronto R&B bandleader

Any of the 35 or so CDs are worthwhile, depending how deeply you want to go into the music. Tiny Grimes, Harry Crafton  and T.N.T. Tribble are among the other artists. Original liner notes from the LPs are included but the print size on some is a challenge.

We don’t necessarily recommend oldies.com but they also have cutout CDs from the Fuel 2000 label blues and soul series, including Introduction to Chicago  Soul, Introduction to Robert Pete Williams, Introduction to Snooky Pryor, Introduction to Johnny Adams, etc., mostly @$4.98.

Blues and Rhythm Hour 73 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Program for Tuesday, April 2, 2013 (1:00-2:30 pm)

A full-length special on Gotham Records of Philadelphia. Gotham Records was a medium-sized independent label that was founded on jazz and R&B. Big enough and well-enough financed to acquire titles from smaller labels but without the distribution clout, in the end, of King, Savoy, or even Atlantic, which was a later arrival on the scene. Nonetheless, Gotham assembled an interesting catalogue of jazz, R&B, and, especially gospel. Our special will deal with the artists recorded by Gotham, rather than the masters acquired from Miltone or from Joe Von Battle in Detroit.

We’ve done features on Savoy, King and Atlantic. Those labels had rosters better known to us today and in their time. Gotham had great artists and its share of hit records. Just as importantly, it represented a fascinating segment of the music being played in the clubs, theatres and churches of the day and brought to record sounds we we wouldn’t have available to us today had Gotham never existed.

 On the show:

Jimmy Preston – Earl Bostic – Dorothy Donegan – Tarheel Slim – Sonny Terry – The Dixieaires – Thelma Cooper – Frank Motley – Tiny Grimes – Edna Gallmon Cooke – Harmonizing Four

Listen to the program at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.msumcmaster.ca. The program will be available to stream or as a podcast until April 29th.

Joe Houston – Blue Lu Barker – Andrew Tibbs – Roy Hawkins – Memphis Slim & Terry Timmons – Harrison Kennedy – Detroiters – Afro Quintette – Friendly Brothers – Como Mamas – Drink Small

Harrison Kennedy

We missed the benefit concert for Harrison Kennedy on March 9th. We need to venture further into The Spectator every day, beyond the front section. Someone told us about it after the event had taken place. The drive is to pay for cancer surgery not covered by OHIP and we gather the campaign to raise funds for the medical procedure is ongoing. You can get more information on Harrison’s website and you can also donate to the fund there at http://www.harrisonkennedy.ca. We have been informed that there will be a Harrison Kennedy concert at This Ain’t Hollywood on April 3rd.

Gotham

Part or all of next week’s program will be devoted to the Gotham label of Philadelphia. Gotham was a fair-sized independent label that recorded southeastern blues, northeastern R&B and some of the finest gospel of the era. It didn’t really survive the rock and roll era but it was an important label for its decade or so of operation and some of the label’s recordings are the kind we call essential today.

Hello world!

Filed under: Uncategorized — cmcompton @ 2:30 am

This is the blogsite for Swear to Tell the Truth: the Blues & Rhythm Show. The program airs every Tuesday between 1:00-2:30 pm on CFMU, 93.3 FM. You can also find the program at cfmu.msumcmaster.ca.

Each week, we’ll try to post information about the program and about the music we play on the show.

We play music from the beginning of the recording era to the present day but mostly from what has been called “the Segregation Era”, the period in which this music was most successful in the cultural marketplace.

On this program you will hear blues, gospel, rhythm and jive quartets, jump bands, guitar evangelists, vocal groups and gospel quartets, zydeco, swamp R&B, soul and soul blues. You’ll also hear, from time to time, mountain blues, western swing, hillbilly boogie , jazz and New Orleans funk.

We’ve played Little Al King, Albert King, B.B. King, Earl King, Freddy King, Saunders King. Ellis King Solomon, King Solomon Hill and King Curtis on the program. We haven’t yet played Pee Wee King, but we will. And we’re planning a feature on King Records.

We’ve played Ida Cox, Sippie Wallace, Memphis Minnie, Elvie Thomas, Mahalia Jackson, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Etta  James, Mable John, Laura Lee, Inez Andrews, and Barbara Carr.

We’ve played the Unique Quartet (1893), The Norfolk Jazz Quartet, Mitchell’s Christian Singers, the Golden Gate Quartet, the Red Caps, the Soul Stirrers, The Spirit of Memphis, the Larks and the Midnighters.

We’ve played Marian Abernathy, Wynonie Harris, Gatemouth Moore, Johnny Otis, the Trenier Twins, Percy Mayfield, Betty Hall Jones, Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers, Smiley Lewis and Big Maybelle.
