Blues and Rhythm Show 123 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, March 18, 2014 (1:00-2:30 pm)

We didn’t post about BRS 123 before the show but we’re trying to make up for that now. We followed several loose threads on that program but the heart of the program was a followup to our show from February 25th, when we presented a special on the blues of St. Louis from 1927 to 1936. On March 18th, we played a couple of tracks from “rediscovered” St. Louis blues artists of the twenties and thirties, a couple of commercial sides from around 1950 and some modern St. Louis blues recorded in the eighties

On the Show:

Jimmy “Preacher” Ellis – Cab Calloway – Diana Braithwaite & Chris Whiteley – Edith Johnson – Clifford “Grandpappy” Gibson – David Dee – Clayton Love – Shirley Caesar (as Baby Shirley) – Swan Silvertones – Etta James – and others

Listen to the program at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.mcmaster.ca. The program will be available to stream or as a podcast until April 14th.

Next week (March 25th)

Our March 25th program didn’t follow any particular plan but included a selection of R&B records, most with backing vocal choruses, either vocal groups or ensemble band vocals. Also a couple of Medicine Show Men and a selection of Gulf Coast soul.

That program was our International Women’s Day special, delayed by several days because all CFMU programming was dedicated to fundraising the previous week. We did not organize the show around particular themes in our IWD program but we presented a selection of women’s blues, rhythm & blues and gospel.

On the Show:

Viviane Greene – Helen Humes – Bessie Smith – Sweet Pease Spivey – Mattie Delaney – Lil Green – Mary Deloatch – Original Gospel Harmonettes – Shakura S’Aida – and others

Blues and Rhythm Show 121 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, March 4, 2014 (1:00-2:30 pm)

BRS 121 is already in the books. We did not find time to preview the show on this site before going to air. Of course, this week is CFMU’s fundraising week–just one week in the year. So this week’s program is devoted to CFMU’s Raise Your Voice 2014 campaign. On the program for our fundraising special, blues, R&B, gospel and soul in 90 minutes. Some big records and some rare  and obscure tracks.

If you happen to be outside of the Hamilton area and listen to the program online, you’re part of our listening audience and we would welcome your pledge. The same technology that makes this program available across the web, makes your contribution to CFMU, 93.3’s fundraising campaign simple and convenient. Just go to cfmu.mcmaster.ca, look for the Promotions bar on the station’s webpage and make your contribution via Paypal.

On the Show:

Sam Price Sextet – Sonny Boy Williamson II – Henry Thomas – Magic Sam – Blenders – Tiny Bradshaw – Georgia Peach – Antioch Female Singers – Bertha Robinson – Dee and Don – Otis Clay – and others

Listen to the program at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.mcmaster.ca. The program will be available to stream or as a podcast until March 31st

Next week (March11th)

March 8th is International Women’s Day. IWD is our excuse for programming a show entirely devoted to women’s blues, R&B, gospel and soul. The first African-American singers to record blues were women but male singers dominated the record label catalogues by the turn of the decade. Opportunities for women in blues, R&B and soul were limited from the thirties on, even through the soul era in the sixties and seventies. The imbalance is reflected in our playlists on Swear to Tell the Truth each week. We like to present an all-women show at least once in the year. Unfortunately, International Women’s Day clashes with CFMU fundraising each March, so we’re presenting this year’s IWD special three days after March 8th.

Blues and Rhythm Show 120 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, February 25, 2014 (1:00-2:30 pm)

We’ve never devoted a feature to St. Louis–until this week. St. Louis and East St.Louis, across the river in Illinois, supported a unique blues culture that nurtured distinctive styles of playing and singing blues. Like Memphis, St. Louis was a destination for migrants from the south and a staging point for others who wished to go on to the north, especially to Chicago. It was definitely a blues city and, in the late twenties and the thirties, it attracted musicians like Lonnie Johnson, Joe Lee Williams and Roosevelt Sykes.

On the Show:

Ciro’s Coon Club Orchestra – St. Louis Bessie – Henry Brown – Henry Townsend – Charley Jordan – Peetie Wheatstraw – St. Louis Jimmy – Charlie “Specks” McFadden – Johnnie Strauss – Teddy Darby – Milton Sparks – and others

Listen to the program at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.mcmaster.ca. The program will be available to stream or as a podcast until March 24th.

We have some live blues and gospel tracks; “raw American gospel” from a Tompkins Square compilation that appears to be out-of-print now; preachers and one-time quartet leads on the Nashboro label

Dexters – Jimmy Nelson – Ray Agee – Clarence Green (Sonny Rhodes) – Mainline – Harrison Kennedy – Missionary Mamie Sample – Reverend Willingham – Johnnie Taylor – and others

Next week (February 25th)

Next week we’ll present some pre-World War 2 blues in some kind of feature yet to be determined.  In two weeks, it will be Fundraising Week at CFMU. That will be March 4th for this program. We hope some of you will show your support for the station and the program, including those who might listen online. (That’s also Fat Tuesday, so we will not be able to present a Mardi Gras program this year.) February 11th will be our annual all-woman show for International Women’s Day. Fundraising prevents us from putting on this show in advance of I.W.D.

Blues and Rhythm Show 118 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, February 11, 2014 (1:00-2:30 pm)

This week, we devote the entire 90 minutes to Bob Geddins‘ Oakland-based record labels and the artists Geddins recorded. Since the “blues revival” of the sixties there has been great interest in records that very few people heard when they were first issued, records issued by operators like Bob Geddins that never had wide circulation. Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie Records befriended Geddins and issued an Oakland Blues LP on Blues Classics that first made us aware of the Oakland blues scene of the forties and fifties over forty years ago.

It’s not that Geddins never produced hits but, over the years he was in the record business, for all the effort he put into his businesses and the outside jobs he held to support his family and sustain his companies, he was rarely in a position to take advantage of a hit record and reap the benefit either personally or for his companies. Artists used his labels as a stepping stone to better-run and -financed companies.

Somehow Bob Geddins outlasted many others in the business and, if he did not achieve the financial comfort he sought, he did leave an important  legacy of recorded blues, gospel and R&B and there can be little doubt that he advanced the careers of a great many artists, even if they found their greatest success with other labels.

We’ll look at recordings made for Bob Geddins over a sixteen year period, 1945-1961.

On the Show:

Rising Star Gospel Singers – Pilgrim Travelers – Lowell Fulson – Bob Geddins’ Cavaliers – Jimmy McCracklin – Roy Hawkins – Jimmy Wilson – Big Mama Thornton – Sugar Pie De Santo – King Solomon

Listen to the program at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.mcmaster.ca. The program will be available to stream or as a podcast until March 10th.

We may present our IWD show on March 11th, three days after International Women’s Day. Still working on our railroad special.

Blues and Rhythm Show 117 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, February 4, 2014 (1:00-2:30 pm)

Looking at some southern blues on this week’s program and mostly from the past half century, i.e. from the album era. When we used to listen to blues and jazz shows on the radio years ago, we were always afraid to miss a  show or part of a show and miss something we hadn’t heard before. That experience informs the way we put together The Blues and Rhythm Show. We try to present the widest selection of music that we can while maintaining a high standard in what we play on the air. This week, fully half of the show is by artists we haven’t previously played on the program.

Included in this week’s show is an edition of King Biscuit Time from radio station KFFA in Helena, Arkansas. Of course, this means Sonny Boy Williamson & His King Biscuit Entertainers, sponsored by King Biscuit Flour, makers of Sonny Boy Cornmeal. These sponsored, usually 15 minute programs, were a feature of radio in the southern states from the early 1930s. It was quite a while before recorded music pushed most live music programming from the airwaves. Examples of radio shows devoted to jazz, country, pop and some African-American gospel and vocal group music have been preserved but not much in the way of blues.

On the Show:

Memphis Gold – Jessie Mae Hemphill – Cliff Butler – Willie Willis & the Wildcatters – King Biscuit Time – Morgan Davis – Houston Stackhouse – Lynn Harmonizers – Eugene “Hideaway” Bridges

Listen to the program at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.mcmaster.ca. The program will be available to stream or as a podcast until March 1st.

Blues and Rhythm Show 116 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, January 28, 2014 (1:00-2:30 pm)

Two themes on The Blues and Rhythm Show this week. We’re playing a fairly random assortment of blues from the Chess label of Chicago. Some big names and an ace inastrumentalist in the mix. Also, a wide-ranging selection of R&B tracks recorded between 1945 and 1960.

On the Show:

Sidemen – Little Walter – Muddy Waters – Little Milton – Fenton Robinson – Mr. Bear & His Bearcats – Jesse Price – Sam “Highpockets” Henderson – Lee Roy Little – Jack de Keyzer

Listen to the program at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.mcmaster.ca. The program will be available to stream or as a podcast until February 24th.

Next week (February 4th)

We’re doing research for a program of railroading songs and railroad themes in blues, R&B and gospel song. We haven’t settled on a theme for next week’s program.

Last week

We played Booker T. & the MGs’ “Chinese Checkers” and described it as a clever bit of “chinoiserie”. According to Rob Bowman, the song wasn’t originally conceived that way. Booker T. Jones devised the piece on an electric piano he had obtained. Some of the keys didn’t work and he wrote the piece using a 5-note scale. By the time the piece was recorded, however, its “Chinese” character seems to have been something Booker T. and the band embraced.

Blues and Rhythm Show 115 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, January 21, 2014 (1:00-2:30 pm)

One major and one minor theme on this week’s program. Major theme is a feature devoted to Robert Nighthawk, a legendary figure who recorded in four different decades but should be better known and recognized for his achievement. Nighthawk reportedly never stayed long in Chicago but and because he spent so much time in the south he may have missed opportunities for larger success as a recording artist. Through radio, he was a recognized figure in the Delta and live recordings from the sixties show what a fine and versatile performer he was. Had he lived longer someone surely would have explored his large and diverse repertoire in studio recordings. His commercial recordings from the forties and fifties provide only a partial picture of his abilities. Although Peter Guralnick’s novel, Nighthawk Blues, is said to be based upon the life of Big Joe Williams, the title seems to invoke the sense of romance and mystery around the figure of Robert McCollum, who adopted his mother’s surname, McCoy, after being involved in a shooting, and later changed it to Nighthawk from his best known early record, “Prowling Night-Hawk”.

We’re also going to play a few tracks from the Stax label and some related material on this week’s program–instigated by Robert Gordon’s recently published study of Stax, Respect Yourself, which we’ve begun reading.

On the Show:

Rufus Thomas – Ruby Johnson – Stax Records, Little Richard – Bill Doggett – Rita Chiarelli – Robert Nighthawk – Dixie Nightingales – and others

Listen to the program at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.mcmaster.ca. The program will be available to stream or as a podcast until February 17th.

Blues and Rhythm Show 114 on 93.3 CFMU (Hamilton, Ontario)

Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, January 14, 2014 (1:00-2:30 pm)

We said on air this week’s show would be a grab-bag and so it is. Some R&B recorded between 1950 and 1959, including tracks from  the under-estimated Derby label; some 1950s Chicago blues especially for those who think we don’t play enough; a few live soul recordings. We try to bring you the essential tracks as well as the stuff you are unlikely to hear on other shows and, in spite of our haste in putting this program together, we think it qualifies.

On the Show:

The Majors – Eunice Davis – Titus Turner – Big Jay McNeely – Snooky Pryor – J.B. Hutto – Willie Mabon – Geno Washington – Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings – Mel Brown – and others

Listen to the program at FM 93.3 in Hamilton or on CFMU online at cfmu.mcmaster.ca. The program will be available to stream or as a podcast until February 10th.
