This episode of the program airs on Election Day in the U.S. Accordingly, we put together a show that attempts to track how Blues and Roots music on commercial record reflected electoral politics and political change over forty years. It wasn’t that unusual for commercial recordings to have political events or social policies as their subject but, as in any era, it wasn’t typical either. Our survey includes recordings made between 1926 and 1983. and includes Blues, Gospel and Country recordings.

Circumstances quite beyond our control led to the fact that there was no podcast of BRS 292, our Chicago Soul Special, available to you if you tried to stream from the CFMU website. There was a technical failure on September 29th. We decided to rebroadcast the program October 6th but, once again, there is no podcast available on the website for reasons that haven’t been explained to us. Swear to Tell the Truth for Tuesday, September 29, 2020 (10:00 to 12:00 noon)

This episode aired on September 29th but podcasts from that date were lost and we decided to reair the show  today, October 6th, to permit online listeners to stream or download.

Think back to the 1960s. It’s easier if you were around back then. At the beginning of the decade there was new interest in what were called “country blues”. Musicians from the pre-world war 2 era were sought out and were recorded on the spot or brought to recording studios. Some had kept up their playing at home, some hadn’t touched an instrument in years, a few had remained active trying to make a living as musicians. As the decade unfolded interest grew about electric Chicago blues and some musicians like J.B. Hutto or Johnny Young who had laid down their instruments returned to playing for new audiences. Dylan went electric. The interest in blues beyond the African-American audience came just as interest in blues was dwindling in the black community and the new blues commentators would complain about the rise of “commercial” Soul music at the expense of “authentic” blues and the displacement of blues from the clubs. Meanwhile, a wave of creativity swept through the clubs and record studios and the new music filled both the clubs and the charts. We think of Soul as emanating from the studios of Memphis and Muscle Shoals. It came from all over but perhaps nowhere more than from Chicago, supported by a wide array of large and small independent record labels.

Ninth show from our North End bubble. This week, six days before Labour Day, we have a feature segment about reflections on work in blues and country music in the pre-war era and beyond. Nothing too serious. Neither black or white vernacular music dealt much with issues of labour, workers’ interests or collective struggle, and few songs deal entirely with the subject of work. But there are many songs that include reflections on work and its impact on peoples’ lives Also on the program, blues from the fities and sixties, Chicago and Memphis; Gospel; and Soul.
